Expertise

I provide expert analysis on all Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with a focus on the following countries:

Eritrea:
Severe human rights abuses include indefinite military conscription, forced labour, arbitrary detention, and torture. Persecution of religious minorities (especially Evangelical Christians and Jehovah’s Witnesses), political dissenters, and returnees from the diaspora.

Sudan:
Ethnic cleansing and political persecution, particularly in Darfur, Blue Nile, and South Kordofan. Women, journalists, and political activists face systemic violence, as well as threats from Rapid Support Forces (RSF). LGBT persons face criminalisation and abuse.

South Sudan:
Ongoing conflict, political instability, and widespread human rights abuses including ethnically targeted violence, persecution of journalists and civil society actors, gender-based violence, and suppression of dissent.

Somalia:
Al-Shabaab persecution, clan-based violence, and lack of effective state protection. Journalists, women, religious minorities, and LGBT individuals face systemic threats. Returnees are at high risk of targeting and insecurity.

Ethiopia:
Conflict-related persecution in Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara regions. Targeting of ethnic minorities, political opposition members, and human rights defenders. Religious tension and widespread sexual and gender-based violence.

Djibouti:
Limited political freedoms, arbitrary arrests of opposition members, and suppression of civil society. Marginalisation of ethnic Afars and Issas. Reports of torture and restrictions on religious minorities and LGBT persons.

Kenya:
Discrimination against Somali refugees and ethnic minorities. Political intimidation, gender-based violence, and abuse by security forces. Inadequate protection for LGBT people and survivors of domestic violence.

Uganda:
Criminalisation of LGBT identities, surveillance of activists, and restrictions on political opposition. Women and religious minorities face discrimination and abuse. Weak rule of law undermines access to justice.
