Elizabeth Amanpour

I am half Iranian and grew up in Tehran and lived through the Islamic Revolution in 1979. I have lived and worked in the Middle East while working for Al Jazeera.

 

While working for Al Jazeera, I produced a news special on Afghanistan where we ran stories on the plight of the Hazara people, one of the main ethnic groups in Afghanistan, and targeted by the Taliban.  More recently for Channel 4 News, I have covered stories about Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in the summer of 2021, including the plight of women who have had their rights severely reversed and forced to cover up and abandon their education. Also we have covered stories about Afghan refugees fleeing Taliban repression into Pakistan, hoping for asylum to the UK.

I produced a special report by an independent film maker on the hunger and poverty afflicting many Afghans since the Taliban rose to power in July 2022. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAX3GFqaA28)

 

For Channel 4 News I have produced stories on Iran about human rights abuses including a special on the release of Anglo-Iranian hostages Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashouri in 2022 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPV2mkd6HN8)

And with Channel 4 News’ International Editor, Lindsey Hilsum, I have produced stories about political prisoners also held in the notorious Evin prison, and also the aftermath of unrest and protest in Iran after the arrest and death in detention of Mahsa Amini (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQKabkL-BHM)

I also produced a piece about a Gazan refugee who lost his parents and his siblings in the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, who finally was granted leave to remain in the UK in order to be cared for by his uncle.
