Description:

Practitioners and those working with children will receive an in-depth look at the various ways in which migrant children can register as British citizens. The seminar will look at the statutory requirements under the British National Act 1981, the Home Office guidance on registration, including the recent amendments to the guidance for discretionary applications under section 3(1) of the British Nationality Act 1981, as well as practical considerations for making applications. It will include an opportunity to participate in case studies of applications under the different routes to registration, either in groups or led by the tutors.

The topics covered will include:

– Registration applications under sections 1(3), 1(4), 3(2), 3(5), 4F and 4G
– Discretionary applications under section 3(1)
– Parental consent and proof of paternity
– Application process and supporting evidence
*We will not be covering naturalisation or registration applications for adults

Audience: Practitioners advising families about British nationality options for children or wanting to learn more about this area of law.
