Stephanie Harrison QC of Garden Court Chambers has been awarded the Human Rights Lawyer of the Year by Liberty.
The award was made at Liberty's annual Human Rights Awards held last night.
Liberty said in a press release that Harrison won the award for her prowess as an advocate for human rights and commitment to progressing the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers and contesting oppressive anti-terrorism measures.
The other nominees were Shauneen Lambe (Lawrence & Co; Just for Kids Law) and Mark Scott (Bhatt Murphy)
According to Garden Court, Stephanie Harrison has dedicated her career to fighting against discrimination and for the fundamental freedoms of minorities and the marginalised.
She is currently working with the EHRC in a challenge brought by Detention Action over the detention of asylum seekers in the fast-track process.
On hearing of her nomination, Harrison said: "With an Executive intent on dismantling our system of justice and revelling in its disregard for fundamental rights and equality before the law it is critical to stand up and support organisations like Liberty who have long championed respect for fundamental rights and freedoms and the right of access to justice for all as integral to our democracy and any civilised society."
