I am a social scientist who has lived and worked extensively across Africa, and for many years based in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Senegal. I regard myself as an expert on each of the countries listed below. For more than 25 years, I have worked as a specialist in political and sociological change on the continent focusing specifically on democratic and constitutional transitions. In this capacity, I have worked as a senior university researcher, run a major commonwealth thinktank, worked as a freelance consultant and as an editor for the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE). I have conducted fieldwork, and written reports for the Open Society Foundation, Rosa Luxembourg Foundation, Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit (CPSU) and produced many educational guides.
I have produced several expert witness reports since 2008 and attended Immigration Tribunals on numerous occasions. I have also worked with refugee agencies and legal representatives.
I have published more than 12 books, and dozens of reports and articles for academic and popular journals, newspapers and websites. I have written extensively on politics and history, studies on some of Africa’s most important political movements, and reports on political change and transition across the continent.
