Occupation
Country Witness Expert on South & Central Asia, Human Rights Specialist, Legal Consultant, Lecturer, Lawyer (Bangladesh)
Expertise

I provide expert analysis on all five Refugee Convention grounds — political opinion, religion, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group (including LGBT and gender-based cases), and nationality — with focus on the following countries:

  • Pakistan: Persecution of religious minorities (Ahmadis, Shias, Christians), political activists, Baloch and Pashtun ethnic groups, women, and LGBT persons. Frequent misuse of blasphemy laws and enforced disappearances.
  • Afghanistan: Widespread persecution under the Taliban of women, Hazaras, former officials, journalists, and LGBT individuals. Severe restrictions on freedoms and violence against minorities.
  • Bangladesh: Political repression (BNP members), attacks on journalists and human rights defenders, violence against Hindus and ethnic minorities, criminalisation of LGBT people, and gender-based violence.
  • India: Rising persecution of Muslims, Christians, and Dalits; political dissent suppressed; targeting of Kashmiris and tribal groups; LGBT individuals face social stigma despite legal changes.
  • Nepal: Discrimination against Dalits, Madhesis, women, and LGBT persons. Weak rule of law, limited justice for domestic violence survivors and wartime victims.
  • Sri Lanka: Continued targeting of Tamils, attacks on Muslims and Christians, political surveillance, gender-based violence, and criminalisation of LGBT identity.
  • Bhutan: Discrimination against ethnic Nepalis (Lhotshampas), restrictions on political and religious freedoms, marginalisation of LGBT people and women.

As an Expert Witness, I am specialised in gender-based violence, political and religious persecution, and rule of law issues in South Asian countries.
